ENHANCING INDIA'S MARITIME SECURITY: THE ROLE OF DELHI POLICY GROUP IN ADDRESSING INDIA'S MARITIME CHALLENGES
India’s geography, with a long coastline of over 7,500 km and extensive maritime interests, makes it vulnerable to a range of maritime security threats. India’s maritime security challenges include piracy, terrorism, smuggling, illegal fishing, and threats to offshore installations. In recent years, China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region and its increasing presence in the Indian Ocean have added to India’s maritime challenges. In this context, the Delhi Policy Group (DPG) has been working towards enhancing India’s maritime security through research, analysis, and advocacy.

Through India's Maritime Security Challenges: A Comprehensive Approach to
Ensuring Maritime Safety and Security
India’s maritime security challenges
have been compounded by several factors. The country’s dependence on seaborne
trade and energy supplies, its long coastline, and strategic location in the
Indian Ocean have made it vulnerable to maritime terrorism, piracy, and
smuggling. The rise of non-state actors such as terrorists, pirates, and
smugglers has added to the maritime security challenges. In addition, the
increasing presence of China in the Indian Ocean, its growing naval
capabilities, and its Belt and Road Initiative have raised concerns about
India’s security in the region.
